Safer Student Drivers

I know for me its very nerve wracking as a parent to send your child to driving lessons and take them out driving for the first time. I always wondered why there isn’t any clear safety device you can attach to your car to let other drivers know that you are driving with a teen that is learning to drive on their permit. I was glad to find some magnetic decals that you can place on your car with the hope that other drivers will notice and be more cautious of the new driver. student driver sticker (link is if you wish to purchase these decals)  Where I come from, driving school costs approximately $400.00 and without it, the auto insurance is much higher. The least the driving schools could do is include these decals with the price of the tuition.

A Parent´s choice

As parents with children that have learning disabilities we strive to get them the education needed to go through their years of school. My personal experience with this has not been an easy task. It starts before grade school, as a baby, who does not learn to sit up at 5 months or talk by age 2. They go to preschool and early intervention helps them to learn some skills, then kindergarten and parents hear from teachers, “they will be fine”. As each grade passes by, child is still not learning the basics as quickly so they are neurologically tested and diagnosed with ADD/ADHD or other diagnoses and put on IEPś in school to help them. I personally had to change elementary schools. Thankfully in the same district so it helped,  temporarily.

As child gets older you see they are still behind and with meeting after meeting, child is still not at grade level. My child has ADD, has taken medication which she claims does not help her. The Special Ed classes that she is in are with kids that have severe disabilities, which puts her further behind because she is not being challenged to even get to grade level. The teachers ¨baby¨ her and the class because of the students with severe disabilities. The problem: This child can learn and is able to learn but their isn’t anyone that can teach her the way she learns at a slower pace with visual tools etc.

As her mother I have tried for years to teach her but since I am the mom their is always confiict between us. Not the childhood I would want my child to have,  school and more school everyday.

Our middle school ends at 8th grade. I requested my child to be retained that year in order to catch up before going into high-school because she was not ready socially or educationally.  She is basically one to two years behind educational and socially wise.  My child also agreed, knowing she was not ready for High School. Other kids were starting to say things to her about why was she in the Special Ed room, which made things worse, and now hating school. I wanted to retain her and have her learn in a regular general classroom. The principal and superintendent denied my request after many meetings.

The principal of the High School does not know my child nor did the superintendent as it was his first year in the school. Not to mention my childś dad passed away that same year between 7th and 8th grade. Do they not understand that must have had some affect on her learning? They told me she would graduate with a ¨certificate” if all else fails.   WHAT! a certificate! No! my child would receive the education to get a High School Diploma, not a certificate. Child is capable. So basically, they will push a child who is capable of earning through each grade until they are out of school. This is absolutely not acceptable. What difference would it be really to them to give the child one more year?

I cannot wrap my head around this. Everyone tells me it affects the ¨score¨ of the school, sorry that is B.S.   I just want my child to learn every grade of school knowing child is capable of doing so. Personally, no parent wishes for child to repeat a grade. I will keep on fighting for my child to receive the proper education. I feel we should be able to make this decision on behalf of our children. We are the ones who know our children best!

Failure of justice system or Dept. of Social Services

People always talk about how awful our justice system is and I have heard this for many years. Now, I have finally witnessed it. As I always try to stay positive about the subjects I write about and I do give a lot of credit to those who are working to truly help our children that are in need of good homes. On that note: Recently, I have witnessed a situation that I do not understand with hopes that my readers will be able to enlighten me on this particular issue.

An infant is removed from home by DSS for very good reasons, both parents are incapable of taking care of infant etc. A family member steps up and makes the decision to be guardians to this infant until one or both parents of the baby can get proper help to get their life together. This family member has a family of their own with two young children.

After about a month of the legal parents not complying to get their infant back which they had rights to see their baby but did not make any effort. The family member that now has guardianship of the infant has been ordered by the court to travel over an hour, 4X a week for the parents of the infant for visitation. So, not only is this family member caring for the infant but now has to travel back and forth an hour each way for visits to the parents who cannot make effort for the sake of their own baby.

The family member who took this infant out of the goodness of their hearts to keep the infant in the family has two young children in school, and in sport activities, which now has completely interrupted their entire schedule and life. Because of this order from the court, it has made it very difficult for the family to help. They cannot possibly drive 4X a week to appease the parents of this infant, parents who willingly gave up their baby. The infant is then placed into a foster home because it is more convenient for the parents? The parents who are not capable to care for and don´t want to care for their infant. How is this fair to the family or to the infant? How is this decision made by the court?
